These muffins are tender, filled with a rich maple-butter tart filling, and topped with a brown sugar pecan crunch. Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a snack!

Butter Tart Muffin Ingredients

Muffin Base

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup pecan pieces

Maple Butter Tart Filling

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup corn syrup
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • Generous pinch of nutmeg
  • Generous pinch of cardamom

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with muffin papers.

Make the Muffins

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the baking soda, baking powder, salt, and flour; set aside.
  2. Cream butter and white sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture and sour cream, alternating and beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Divide the batter among the muffin cups. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and pecans, then sprinkle this mixture over each muffin.
  6. Bake on the middle rack for 30-35 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool muffins in the tin for 15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Make the Butter Tart Filling

  1. In a heatproof mixing bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, maple syrup, eggs, salt, nutmeg, and cardamom. For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender.
  2. Pour the mixture into a small baking dish (or 2 ramekins) and bake at 350°F for 20-30 minutes, or until just set.
  3. Let the filling cool slightly.

Assemble the Butter Tart Muffins

  1. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke a hole in the center of each muffin.
  2. Fill the hole with the butter tart filling.
  3. Allow muffins to cool completely before eating, as the filling will be very hot.

Storage: Keep these muffins in an airtight container for up to two days—if they last that long!
